In the ongoing weekly series regarding the effects of local businesses on the Dead End economy and how emigrants from Detroit are locating employment within the boundaries of the city, businesswoman Kendall Eiren was interviewed about her former business, “Psychic Paths Psychopaths”, and the effects she felt she had for the citizens of Dead End and how her business promoted economic development and prosperity in the city. Ms. Eiren is also currently the fire chief at DEFD.

Overall, Ms. Eiren felt that her business had value among the citizens of the city and helped to promote and stabilize their wealth by allowing them to retain their income while they were attempting to achieve some economic security during the move into DE. During her interview Ms. Eiren stated the following about her former business: “I loved owning my own business… it thrived since we had it… it made me feel like I had a purpose… I always done tarot cards… even as a teen….people who was bored… or was confused… came in and had their cards read… one a good friend of mine came in got his cards read and it inspired him to go tell his girlfriend he was in love with her… cause he had been holding back having had a messy divorce.. Sure enough she loved him to… they are now raising five kids together and getting married… cutest couple I ever seen… another came in… He had no money… but he looked totally lost… and my heart went out to him… he was brand new in town… and hungry and broke… I read his cards… and his cards gave him hope… he’s also doing well in town now”.

Despite her enjoyment and pride of having helped the citizens of DE, unfortunately she had to allow it to go. She stated that “I love it… but when I got promoted to Lt. I spend more time here… as I didn’t get a chance to hire anyone at the shop … so business clients knew I was trying to do better at the FD… I been a firefighter since I got out of school before really my dad was a firefighter… so I grew up in the station… it’s in my blood… it’s my passion and my drive. So the choice really wasn’t hard… I can afford both the station and the shop but time… the shop deserved someone who can give the people that hope they get when they do believe or get a reading… You know”.

Overall, Ms. Eiren felt that she wasn’t sure if Psychic Paths had a significant economic success building up the economics within Dead End, but she was sure that it was able to boost the morale of them. She stated the following: “I don’t know if I made a difference … maybe I made someone’s life easier. Maybe I helped them realize it’s time to move on and let go to something or to keep the hope alive… maybe kept someone out of trouble… or hell for all I know I might of put them in trouble… Never really know once they leave the shop… Sometimes they came back… sometimes I seen them on the street… I would like to think so… but other than that I don’t know if I made a different but tarot was a hobby… and it made people happy… hell half the time I forgot to charge half of them.. “She felt that she was able to help people feel that they were welcomed and supported, even if she did not request payment from her services.
