Meet the Owner – The Head Shed
This week I was given the fantastic opportunity to get myself down to the Head Shed Salon to speak to the very promising and ambitious new owner, Harmony Coupe. After being made to feel very welcome and at home, we sat down to discuss her story, how she came to be and of course what the future holds for her and her salon.
So, to start off… What can you tell me about your fantastic Salon? What services are you offering to your customers? Is it a unisex salon or single sex? That sort of thing.
“Lets me see, it’s a unisex salon, men need to look good too, you know. Just your basic everyday salon, we do hair, pedicures, manicures, facials, and waxing. Just facial waxing for the time being though. If I ever find a masseuse, we might even pick that up. I hope to even offer at home services a bit later on, need to get me some girls in here to work, for those who can’t get out… Home bound types. Oh and weekly specials… Can’t forget those, I know it’s a poor city, no excuse to look bad though.”
So where did this all begin for you? Where did you pick up your expertise?
“Where to start, where to start… I was just a simple girl, my mom left me and my dad when I was about 3. I never got that mom and me bonding time, no one to teach me to fix myself up. Only child, my dad was a drunk, when not working with the police… When I got to high school, the girls didn’t really accept me… All pretty and prim ya know. Anyhow, my junior year we could go to trade school and they had some courses they offered… Cosmetology was one of them… I took it, found out I was a hottie after all… Been doing it ever since. Got my license out of high school, and now still doing it at 26”
Now I heard you say that you were looking to get a masseuse in to join your team. Are there any other things that you might be looking to bring to the table to put you ahead of your competition?
“Well competition, it’s a good thing I guess. Like I said, I’m here for the people, my prices will reflect that. I think my kind bigheartedness will open the door to bring in some lovely people, but I do have some ideas. Daddy always said not to give all your secrets away… Maybe that was who would want the cow if you give the milk away for free.”
Since deciding to go it alone and run your own salon, what would you say has been the most challenging part for you? And equally, what have you found easy?
“Well, hell I guess finding a stylist is the biggest challenge. That’s why I am offering to help new hires get their license, through training. I’m going to offer bi-weekly classes, once I get settled in for anyone in the community who wants to learn, or just wants to come and gossip, have a glass of wine… I think the easiest thing so far is how accepted I’ve felt in the community, I mean I worked down at the Inn with T for a while, but I was surprised at how welcoming the community can be.”
And finally, what does the future hold for the Head Shed Salon? Where would you like to see yourself, and your salon, in say, Five years’ time?
“I want to make this lovely city my home, be here for the community and build a strong future together. Help the people of Dead End feel as pretty on the outside as they are on the inside. Yep, I’m here for the long run”
If there’s one thing that I’ve learnt in the time that I spent with Harmony, it’s that a little pampering and a little personal time can go a long way to improve both your mood, and self-confidence.
