An Interview with Dr Leighanne Thomas
I was thinking about the first post to write for the DE Daily and came upon a rather unique and special person that had made her way to DE. Dr Leighanne Thomas. So, I decided to sit down and have an actual interview with her. She entered my home above the Daily and after I offered her coffee we sat down and I went to work on some rather serious questions.

Leighanne Thomas would take a seat at my computer desk. “Thanks for bringing me in, Syrena. I’m excited to talk of some things with the hospital with you.” She spoke and so we began.
I began right off asking her about her personal background first as she replied she was raised by her uncle and took off to start her new life 2 days after graduation, worked odd jobs and made some good money, graduating with a 4.0 in her studies all the way through med school. There she was working odd jobs in Dead End City till a Dr Yheng reached out to recruit her into the DEMH.
The next question was about getting her foot in the door and what inspired her to be a doctor and where that had come from. Her reply was calm and cheerful explaining that delving into a peek into the adult world of women, was a chance to understand women’s issues, making for inspiration to help others, work to maintain a healthy balance in working with women to be more mature, motivated and healthy and aware of certain issues.
I asked her what her accomplishments have been so far working in the DEMH and she was emphatic in bringing up a few points of awareness and quoted “ I would have to say I have had a few. probably none more than being able to deliver four children, two sets of twins in my time here. It is amazing to see life come into this world, especially in a place like Dead End.” Leigh would frown at her disappointment, “Right now, I wouldn’t call it a disappointment, but a grievance.”
“It is the victim blaming mentality of those in law enforcement here in Dead End. The DA’s office has made unreasonable requests in the area of documenting and treating sexual assault.”
“I personally believe a transvaginal ultrasound or anal ultrasounds are highly invasive and wholly unnecessary in documenting cases of rape, but if they are not done as part of the rape kits, the DA’s office almost unilaterally tosses the results, believing that a rape didn’t occur or that we made errors in the collection. Both are incorrect assumptions.” She added “I know some parts of law, but if I am collecting evidence, I have to do what I am told. I just don’t think that almost victimizing someone in the middle of possibly the worst day of their live a second time in the emergency room is the way to go.”
She went on to explain how many people who run the city had no idea how to deal with rape or ever experienced it in a victims shoes and should they, it might enlighten them to be more sensitive to victims. She also expressed with concern that she was hopeful but distressed that the hospital needed some upgrades and more funding. More of a concern was that cases were never brought out with consequences for the victims in the chain of custody between the PD and the DEMH staff regarding rape kits and a special area might be designated for that. These questions and answers were left open for debate but we left the interview with a few notable kind references regarding the future of doctors and the DEMH.
I asked her what we could hope to see soon for improvements. Her face lit up excited and pleased at this point in the interview and she said “ “I hope to be very busy helping patients in both the hospital and asylum reach their full potential, be it recovering from injuries or recovering from or coping with serious psychological issues. The Dead End Medical Complex should be a place of healing, and Dr. Yheng’s and our vision is exactly for that; to continue and improve on the experience there. Stay tuned for exciting open house type things that we are planning in both places.”
We ended the interview on a good note and I thanked her for her time and a few minutes later she left my place leaving the smell of her perfume, professional aura with me as she closed the door.
